The more time I spend in the countryside, the more I realise how much of it is split up into fields or enclosures. There isn’t much of it that isn’t dedicated to agriculture or farming in one way or another. A lot of fences and a lot of barbed wire. It’s quite sad to look across the landscape and see the sparse groups of trees along field edges and think that it used to all be trees. I love living in the countryside, but the reality of just how much humans have changed and industrialised the natural environment is depressing at times. It still beats the city for me, though.
